Well written, Shawn, and I completely agree! I entered one competition years ago myself. In a way it felt like taking the 'boys' out for a lap dance.

What really got me excited was submitting artwork to an agency in New York sponsoring an auction to raise funds for the local Children's Hospital. I never heard what my piece when for and it didn't matter. There was never any recognition for my participation but that wasn't the point. It fed my soul to be connected to something charitable through the work that I do.

Most of them are rigged anyway. Look through any HOW design issue and the same groups are winning everything. Don't feel bad, the true measure of your design ability is the clients who walk back in the door time after time. I have always been far more impressed with the number of years a firm has held onto a client, than how many awards they won for them.

Chin up, there has to be an award out there for whippersnappers under 50, you should be a shoe-in!

Kudos to you Shawn! I agree with your sentiments exactly. The feeling of doing outstanding work and gaining the respect because of it, is the key. And I have a lot of old bowling trophies collecting dust you can have. No sense in paying for those either!
